Medical Abortion Pill in Canada

Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill) In Canada – Mifegymiso

The Abortion Pill – Mifegymiso (Mifepristone/Misoprostol) received approval in Canada in July 2015. However, it has been successfully and safely used in Europe since 1988. Mifegymiso is an alternative for terminating an early pregnancy up to 9 weeks or 63 days after your last menstrual period.

This method has become popular in Canada as a less invasive option that may feel more natural to some women, resembling a miscarriage. It does not require anesthesia or instruments, allowing women to undergo the procedure in the comfort and privacy of their homes.

The medical abortion involves taking one tablet of Mifepristone on day 1 and four tablets of Misoprostol 24-48 hours later. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for maintaining early pregnancy, halting its growth and detachment from the uterine wall. Misoprostol, containing prostaglandin, helps expel the pregnancy.

In most cases, women opting for medical abortion need only one clinic visit. A follow-up blood test at a nearby lab must be done within a week to confirm the medication’s effectiveness. Once the results are received, we will contact you by phone.

The abortion pill cannot be purchased online or at a pharmacy. Only doctors specially trained in abortion care can acquire and provide Mifegymiso. Our clinic’s medical staff have extensive expertise and experience in delivering safe and empathetic abortion care.

The abortion pill (Mifegymiso) is a three-step process

The abortion pill involves a 3 step process, including learning more about what will happen on the first day of taking the pill, what will happen on the second day of taking the pill and finally a follow-up appointment after your blood test.

Day 1

On the first day, you will take one (1) tablet of Mifepristone. Mifepristone will stop the growth of your pregnancy. You cannot reverse the effects of the medication once taken.

Day 2

On the second day, the four (4) Misoprostol tablets are taken at home within 24-48 hours after taking the Mifepristone. The Misoprostol tablets will cause the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy naturally.

Day 2

A follow-up blood test done at your nearest lab is required within one week of your appointment to confirm that the medication was successful.

The Abortion Pill (Mifegymiso) is up to 95-98% effective

If the Abortion Pill is unsuccessful, a surgical procedure will be necessary to complete the abortion process.
